Each year the Mayville Athletic Booster Club recognizes an individual for their contributions to our sports programs by presenting him or her with the “Katie Award”. This award was established in honor of the late Katie Schwitchtenberg in recognition of her many years of support for Mayville Athletics. The recipient of the 2023 Katie Award is James Bartelt.
James has been involved in Mayville Athletics his entire life. As a graduate of Mayville High School, he lettered in five sports and was recognized for his accomplishment by being inducted into the Mayville Hall of Fame in 2013. During his 25-year teaching career in Mayville he coached Jr. High Basketball, Football, Cross Country, as well as Varsity Tennis.
For more than 60 years, James, accompanied by his late wife, Marion, could be found in the stands cheering on our various Mayville sports teams.
James brings a unique talent to the Mayville Booster Club based on his passion for the history of Mayville athletes and our athletic teams. James has written numerous articles for the local paper highlighting the accomplishments of these athletes and teams. He has spent countless hours researching Mayville athletes by digging through old yearbooks and newspaper archives, as well as contacting family members and former teammates when possible. To date, James has submitted 17 applications to the Hall of Fame committee in the hope that these former athletes of Mayville High School will be remembered and honored for their accomplishments. The history of Mayville Athletics remains alive today due to the commitment and effort James has contributed.
The Mayville Athletic Booster Club is proud to present the 2023 Katie Award to James Bartelt.
